DETERMINATION OF HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATION IN SURFACE WATER AND FISH TISSUES OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS FROM DADI KOWA RESERVOIR, GOMBE STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
Determination Of Heavy Metals Concentration In Surface Water And Fish Tissues (Oreochromis Niloticus) From Dadi Kowa Reservoir, Gombe State Nigeria, were carried out to assess the concentration of heavy metals in surface water and fish tissues of Oreochromis niloticus (e.g., gills, liver, and muscles). Water and fish samples were collected from three (3) sampling points (A,B and C) in the reservoir according to the activities taking place along the River. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) were used to detect the concentrations of heavy metals. The results revealed that lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in surface water exceeded WHO permissible limits, with mean values of 0.05 mg/L and 0.02 mg/L, respectively. In fish tissues, cadmium (Cd) showed the highest bioaccumulation, particularly in the liver, with a mean concentration of 0.5 mg/kg. Spatial variations indicated higher pollution levels near the inflow area, likely due to agricultural runoff. The findings highlight the potential risks of heavy metal pollution to aquatic ecosystems and human health, emphasizing the need for regular monitoring and mitigation measures to reduce pollution in the reservoir.
