Abstract

ABSTRACT The taxonomical classification of ornamental plants in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, serves as a fundamental exploration of the diverse flora that contributes to the aesthetic appeal of the region. Ornamental plants play a vital role in landscaping, urban beautification, and environmental enhancement. This study aimed to identify, document, and classify the ornamental plant species found in Maiduguri based on their taxonomic characteristics. The findings revealed a rich diversity of ornamental plants in Maiduguri, showcasing a blend of native and exotic species. The taxonomic classification highlighted the botanical families, genera, and species present in the region. Common families like Rosaceae, Asteraceae, and Lamiaceae were identified, with representatives from both herbaceous and woody plant types. Furthermore, the study shed light on the ecological preferences and distribution patterns of ornamental plants within Maiduguri. This information is crucial for sustainable landscaping practices, conservation efforts, and the promotion of indigenous species in urban greening initiatives. The research contributes valuable insights to the existing knowledge of Maiduguri's plant biodiversity, providing a foundation for future studies in horticulture, landscape design, and environmental management.
