THE EFFECTS OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON EMPLOYEES’ PERFORMANCE (A STUDY OF IBARAPA EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, ERUWA)
Abstract
The study aimed at assessing the effect of leadership styles on employees’ performance
at Ibarapa East Local Government, Eruwa. The main objective of this study was is to
examine the effect of different leadership styles (transformational, transactional,
autocratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles) on employees’ performance. A survey
research strategy was adopted in which 60 usable structured questionnaires were
collected from the total questionnaires distributed. The findings show that Democratic
leadership style is the most exhibited style at the organization followed by the laissez-
faire. Employee performance is above average. Overall, scores in democratic
leadership style were found to be strongly correlated with both measures of employee
performance and overall performance except for the intellectual simulation dimension,
which had insignificant positive correlation with quality of performance. Laissez faire
leadership style was found to be positively correlated with both measures of employee
performance as well as overall performance. Authoritative leadership style had
insignificant relationship. The results suggest that supervisors in organizations need to
use a lot of different leadership style for different situation or rather embrace
democratic leadership style, but not autocratic leadership. From the results,
Democratic leadership could have greater effects on employee productivity and quality
of performance. It is recommended therefore that Democratic is the most effective
leadership styles
