Abstract

Ceramic tiles are widely used in modern construction due to their durability, aesthetic appeal, and ease of maintenance. However, the success of tile installations depends not only on the quality of the tiles but also on the materials used in the fixing process. Among these materials, sand plays a critical role in determining the strength and durability of tile adhesive. Sharp sand, characterized by its coarse and angular particles, is often considered for tile fixing because of its ability to enhance mechanical bonding and resist shrinkage. Despite these advantages, concerns exist regarding its workability and long-term adhesion performance. This study investigates the suitability of sharp sand in ceramic tile fixing, with a focus on its properties and performance in adhesive mixtures. The research is motivated by challenges such as cracking, delamination, and poor bonding commonly observed in tiled surfaces, which are often linked to improper material selection. Conducted within the Civil Engineering Department of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, the study aims to bridge the knowledge gap surrounding the use of sharp sand in tile installations. By evaluating the characteristics and behavior of sharp sand in tile adhesives, this research seeks to determine its effectiveness and provide evidence-based recommendations for its use. The findings are expected to contribute to improved construction practices, reduce tile failures, and enhance the durability and safety of tiled structures.
