DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTACTLESS SMART DUSTBIN
Abstract
In recent years, automation and smart systems have been widely adopted to
improve hygiene, efficiency, and convenience in daily life. One such innovation
is the development of a contactless smart dustbin. This project utilizes an Arduino
microcontroller in combination with an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to create a
dustbin that operates without physical contact. The ultrasonic sensor detects the
proximity of a user’s hand or object, and when within a predefined distance, the
system automatically triggers a servo motor to open the lid of the dustbin. After
a short delay, the lid closes automatically, ensuring proper waste disposal while
minimizing the risk of contamination from direct contact. This design promotes
better hygiene, particularly in public places, hospitals, and households, by
reducing the spread of germs and viruses. The system is low-cost, easy to
implement, and energy-efficient, making it a practical solution for maintaining
cleanliness and fostering a smarter waste management environment.
