Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the effects of crude methanolic extract of Dialium guineense leaves on Prothrombin Time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT)in Wistar rats. Wistar rats(n=18)were divided into 3 groups of 6 rats per group, labelled A to C.Group C served as control while groups A and B were orally administered with graded doses of the extract(A=500,B=250)mg/kg b.wt daily for 14 days. Bood samples (2.0ml) were collected from each rat on days 8 and 15 respectively through the retro-obital plexus of the median canthus of the eyes with capillary tube into tri-sodium citrate anticoagulant containers for the analysis of PT and APTT. Days 8 and 15 revealed significantly prolonged PT in group A (500mg/kg b.wt)when compared with the control(p0.05). This result pattern suggests that this extract may probably possess properties that affect PT and APTT when orally administered into Wistar rats.
