Abstract

This present study is aimed on evaluating the phytochemical constituents of kolanuts. The sample was collected from Iwolo-oye in Ezeagu LGA, Enugu State. The kolanut was washed, dried and pulverized to powder and was further extracted with methanol. This study highlights the phytochemical composition of kola nut, revealing key compounds like tannins (0.346 mg/L), saponins (15.0%), flavonoids (5.1%), terpenoids (11.83 mg/L), and steroids (7.151 mg/L). These compounds are known for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular health benefits. Tannins exhibit antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, while saponins and terpenoids offer anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and cholesterol-lowering properties. Cardiac glycosides (0.0201 mg/L) contribute to heart rate regulation. These results suggest that kola nut could be used in the development of therapeutic agents for treating various diseases. Further studies on its nutritional value and potential toxic effects are recommended to maximize its medicinal applications.
