RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN NIGERIA: ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Religious conflict has remained a persistent challenge in Nigeria, affecting national unity,
security, and socio-economic development. This study examines the underlying causes,
manifestations, and possible solutions to religious conflicts in Nigeria. Adopting a
qualitative and analytical approach, the research explores how historical divisions, political
manipulation of religion, economic inequality, and ethnic tensions contribute to recurring
violence between religious groups. The study further highlights the role of extremist
ideologies and weak institutional responses in exacerbating these conflicts.
Findings reveal that religious conflict in Nigeria is rarely caused by religion alone but is
often intertwined with political interests, poverty, and identity struggles. The consequences
include loss of lives, destruction of property, displacement of communities, and long-term
distrust among citizens.
The study concludes that sustainable solutions require a multi-dimensional approach,
including interfaith dialogue, equitable governance, improved education, and stronger
legal frameworks. It recommends proactive conflict prevention strategies, promotion of
religious tolerance, and the strengthening of national institutions to foster peaceful
coexistence.
