ASSESSMENTS OF PLANT SPECIES DISTRIBUTION WITHIN KALTUNGO AND BILLIRI SCRAP METAL AND RUBBER DUMP SITE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The collection of scrap metals is a major source of heavy metal pollution of the environment. Metal tolerant plants that grow in heavy metal polluted sites are known as metallophytes. Thus, this study identified plants around scrap metal and rubber dump sites that could be used as a phytoremediation. Strategic random quadrat sampling method was used for plant identification. Plants identified from the study include: Euphorbia hirta L. Chrysopogon zizanioides L. Senna Occidentalis (L) LINK, Digitaria sanguinalis( L.) Eleusine indica, Waltheria indica, Cyperus squarrosus L., Catharanthus roseus, Tridax procumbens, Digitaria sanguinalis, Hisbicus sabdariffa. L., Desmodium unicinatum (Jacq) Dc, Nelsonia canescens (Lam) spreng, Malvastrum coromandelianum (L.), Senna obtusifolia (L.) H. S Irwin and Barn, Amaranthus viridis L., Platago lanceolata L, Dactyloctenium austral Therefore, the plants could be applied for phytoremediation of heavy metals. It was observed that plants in the Poaceae family had the highest frequency of occurrence. Eleusine indica was most cited in the frequency of citation.
