Abstract

Abstract This study investigated the knowledge and practice of family planning among women of childbearing age in Azare Metropolitan, Bauchi State. The study objectives were to assess the knowledge of family planning among women of childbearing age, to assess the practice of family planning among women of childbearing age and to assess the influencing factors of family planning among women of childbearing age in Azare Metropolitan, Bauchi State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 327 randomly selected women aged 15–49 years. The data were analyzed using simple frequency counts and percentages to assess knowledge levels, utilization patterns, and factors influencing the use of family planning. Findings revealed that most respondents were aware of various family planning methods such as injectables, pills, implants, and condoms. However, the actual practice of family planning was moderate due to several influencing factors, including cultural beliefs, religious restrictions, fear of side effects, spousal disapproval, and distance to health facilities. Although many women acknowledged the affordability of services, a significant number had not been adequately counseled by health professionals. The study concludes that while knowledge of family planning is high among the target group, its usage is still hindered by socio-cultural and systemic barriers. The study recommends enhanced health education, male involvement, community sensitization, and improved access to family planning services to increase uptake and promote reproductive health among women of childbearing age in AzareMetropolitan.
