Abstract

This study aims to conduct a preliminary screening of Citrus limon (lemon) leaves for saponin glycosides. While lemon fruits are widely recognized for their medicinal and nutritional benefits, the phytochemical composition of lemon leaves remains underexplored, particularly in terms of their saponin content. This research seeks to bridge this gap by examining the presence of saponin glycosides in lemon leaf extracts. Lemon leaves were collected, dried, ground, and subjected to methanol extraction. Phytochemical screening was carried out using standard procedures, with a specific focus on the frothing test to detect saponin glycosides. The results confirmed the presence of saponins, alongside other bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and tannins. The findings of this research suggest that lemon leaves could be a valuable source of saponin glycosides, with potential applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields. Further studies are recommended to quantify the saponins and explore their therapeutic properties in detail.
