ASSESSMENT OF MAJOR ION CONCENTRATION IN BOREHOLE WATER SAMPLES USING STATISTICAL PARAMETERS IN EFFURUN, UVWIE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
This study assesses the concentration of major ions in borehole water samples in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, using statistical parameters. Water samples were collected from selected boreholes and analyzed for key physicochemical parameters including calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), chloride (Cl⁻), sulfate (SO₄²⁻), and bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻). Statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, correlation, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to evaluate the distribution and relationships of the ions. The results indicated variations in ion concentrations across sampling locations, with some parameters exceeding recommended limits for drinking water. The findings highlight potential risks to public health and emphasize the need for regular monitoring and proper water treatment strategies to ensure safe consumption.
