Abstract

ABSTRACT This project focuses on the design, construction, and performance evaluation of a prototype drip irrigation system aimed at improving practical understanding of irrigation techniques among students. Drip irrigation is an efficient method of delivering water directly to the root zone of plants, minimizing water wastage and enhancing crop productivity. The study was carried out using locally available materials such as PVC pipes, emitters, water tank, valves, and fittings to develop a cost-effective prototype model. Design calculations were performed to determine crop water requirements, number of emitters, discharge rates, and system efficiency. The constructed prototype was tested and evaluated based on parameters such as water distribution, discharge rate, irrigation efficiency, and system performance. The results showed that the system achieved efficient water delivery with minimal losses, demonstrating its effectiveness as a teaching and practical tool. The study concludes that the prototype drip irrigation system is suitable for small-scale applications and educational purposes. It is recommended that low-cost materials and improved emitter designs be adopted to enhance affordability and durability.
