Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of public spending on poverty reduction in Imo State, Nigeria, with particular focus on Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration. The study aims to determine the types of public spending programs implemented, assess their effectiveness in reducing poverty, and identify challenges affecting their impact. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, targeting 300 respondents, including beneficiaries of public programs, government officials, and local stakeholders. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests. Findings indicate that public spending programs, especially youth empowerment schemes, free education initiatives, and healthcare improvements, positively impacted income, employment, and access to essential services. However, challenges such as corruption, poor targeting, insufficient funding, and inadequate monitoring limited their overall effectiveness. The study concludes that while public spending is crucial for poverty reduction, its impact depends on transparency, proper targeting, and effective implementation. Recommendations include improved targeting, accountability mechanisms, community participation, and continuous monitoring of public programs. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers seeking to enhance the effectiveness of public expenditure in poverty alleviation.
