Abstract

ABSTRACT Plastics are widely used but their poor disposal creates serious environmental problems, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Recycling through crushing offers a solution, but existing machines are often costly and inefficient. This study focused on modifying a plastic crushing machine using locally available materials to improve efficiency and reduce cost. The machine was tested under different conditions, considering throughput, efficiency, blade clearance, screen clearance, and speed. Four plastics, HDPE, LDPE, PVC, and PET, were used for evaluation. Results showed HDPE performed best with 91 kg/hr throughput and 85% efficiency, while PET was least efficient at 45 kg/hr and 24%. Optimum blade clearance (1–2 mm), larger screen clearance (8 mm), and speed up to 1500 rpm improved performance. In conclusion, the modified machine achieved higher efficiency, throughput, and durability, making it suitable for small-scale recycling. Its adoption can reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability.
