DESIGN OF AN IOT BASED SMART HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM
Abstract
Nigeria is currently plagued with the challenge of insufficient electrical supply, and to top to this challenge, most resident practice poor energy consumption habits which leads to energy wastage and unnecessarily high electricity bills. Aside the need for the country to improve its supply of electricity to residents, there is also the need to develop a system that helps the homeowners or residents practice better energy saving habits.
This study is therefore aimed at designing an IoT-based home automation system that allows the control of appliances in a housing circuit via remote location and check the status of these appliances, in order to improve energy efficiency and provide convenience. The project makes use of ESP8266, relays and cloud-based server to implement this system, and a user-friendly interface for the monitoring and control of various appliances in the home with the sole purpose of improving energy efficiency. It also provides voice automation to further the user-friendliness and convenience of the system.
The system’s core functionality includes the remote control of household appliances, such as lighting, sockets, etc. The implementation and testing of the proposed system demonstrated improved efficiency and convenience. The system’s modular design allows for easy integration of additional devices and scalability for future expansions. This project work therefore offers a practical and cost-effective solution for modern households enabling users to seamlessly control their home environment, remotely.
