DETERMINATIONOF ANTI-OXIDANT ACTIVITY, QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF METHANOL EXTRACT OF EMILIA SONCHIFOLIA LEAVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Attention has been drawn to the utilization of local plants as sources of treatment
agents for diseases and some abnormalities in animals. However, deep insights
about the properties of these plants heralded to serve as cure for these diseases are
not deeply investigated. This research work focused on assessing the antioxidant potential
(activities) and the quantitative determination of methanol leaf extract of Emilia sonchifolia.
Emilia sonchifolia leaves were gotten from a nearby area in IkotAkpaden in MkpatEnin. The
leaves were prepared for extraction using methanol as the solvent for the extraction process,
after which the extract was analysed for the major phytochemical contents. The result of the
analysis indicated the presence of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and
f
lavonoids. The antioxidant study compared the leaf extract with that of the standard antioxidant
drug, ascorbic acid. The ascorbic acid was found to underperform. However, the results of the
different fractions, as specified in the methods, indicated an improved performance of the
ascorbic acid as contained in the report.
