Abstract

ABSTRACT The increasing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance has prompted renewed interest in medicinal plants as potential sources of safe, affordable, and effective antimicrobial agents. This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of aqueous extracts of Carica papaya leaves against selected bacterial isolates (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). Fresh papaya leaves were collected, air-dried, pulverized, and extracted using distilled water. The extract was subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening, and its antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method at concentrations of 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/mL. Ciprofloxacin served as the positive control, while sterile distilled water was the negative control.
