Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines socio-economic development in Nigeria using Imo State as a case study (2015). The main objective was to evaluate the level of economic and social development, assess the impact of government policies, and identify the factors affecting development in the state. The study adopted a descriptive research design and used both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected from 200 respondents, including residents and government officials, using structured questionnaires and interviews. Secondary data were obtained from government reports, statistical publications, and previous studies. The study found that while there was notable progress in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, challenges such as unemployment, poverty, limited access to tertiary education, and inadequate SME support persisted. Chi-square analysis confirmed that government policies in infrastructure, education, and healthcare significantly influenced socio-economic development. The study concludes that targeted interventions, community participation, and holistic development strategies are necessary to ensure sustainable growth. Recommendations include improving infrastructure, expanding education and healthcare services, supporting SMEs, and implementing effective monitoring and evaluation of policies
