Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled Impediments to Women Political Participation in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State examined challenges to women political advancement in the political process of the present fourth republic which came to reality on May, 29th 1999 after thirty years of military usurpation of political power. Since 1999 the political landscape of Nigeria has been characterized by masculinity, electoral irregularities and greater violence. The magnitude of women marginalization has risen and the political elites have relegated women to the background in Numan local government area of Adamawa state in spite of the remarkable population of women. Data were collected using primary source and secondary means. Data obtained were analyzed using tables, simple percentage and chi-square. The study found that low level of education of women and inadequate financial capacity affect their political participation in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that government should empower women through necessary constitutional provisions. Accordingly, government must repeal all decrees/laws that inhibit competition and must pass laws that protect women to enhance their political participation in a male dominated political process.
