Abstract

This study investigates the multifaceted effects of urbanization on child development in Gombe Metropolis. Utilizing a field survey conducted in 2025 with 380 respondents from diverse age groups, genders, and occupational backgrounds, the research examines critical areas such as healthcare access, recreational facilities, community ties, and the impacts of social fragmentation and violence on children's emotional and physical well-being. The findings reveal that while urbanization enhances access to healthcare and quality education, significant deficiencies exist in recreational infrastructure and social cohesion. Moreover, exposure to violence and social fragmentation appear to adversely affect children’s emotional health. These results underscore the necessity for targeted urban planning and policy interventions aimed at mitigating the negative consequences of urban growth while promoting environments conducive to healthy child development. The study contributes to the broader understanding of urbanization’s dual impact—highlighting both its benefits and challenges—thus providing valuable insights for future policy formulation and urban management strategies.
