Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of aging and the challenges faced by older adults in Jaba Local Government Area, focusing on key socio-demographic factors, family support systems, religious involvement, governmental responsiveness, health issues, and social engagement. Using a sample of 150 respondents, the research reveals that the majority of elderly individuals perceive aging negatively, primarily due to health deterioration, economic hardship, and social isolation. It was found that familial and governmental support is minimal, with the elderly relying heavily on informal income sources and family assistance. Health challenges, including chronic diseases like arthritis and diabetes, are prevalent among the elderly, further exacerbating their vulnerability. The study also identifies a significant lack of social engagement, with older adults not participating in community activities. Based on these findings, the study recommends several interventions to improve the well-being of older adults in Jaba. These include the establishment of government-supported elderly care programs, the restoration of the extended family support system, increased involvement of religious organizations, improved healthcare accessibility, the promotion of social activities, the development of elderly-friendly infrastructure, and the launch of awareness campaigns to change negative perceptions of aging. By addressing these issues, the study suggests that the quality of life for elderly individuals in Jaba can be significantly enhanced, fostering a more supportive and inclusive environment for aging populations.
