Abstract

ABSTRACT This project investigates the geotechnical properties of lateritic soils from Rumueme, Port Harcourt, to assess their suitability for engineering works. Soil samples were collected from three points within a borrow pit and analyzed for natural moisture content, grain size distribution, and Atterberg limits. The natural moisture contents ranged from 8.93% to 17.51%, while grain size analysis showed less than 12% fines, classifying the soils as poorly graded sands (SP) under the Unified Soil Classification System. The liquid limits ranged from 25.47% to 29.87%, plastic limits from 13.95% to 16.54%, and plasticity indices from 9.66% to 13.33%, indicating low to medium plasticity. AASHTO classification placed Sample 2 in group A-2-4, suitable for road construction, while Samples 1 and 3 fell into A-2-6, requiring stabilization before use. The study emphasizes the variability of lateritic soils and the importance of site-specific characterization in geotechnical design.
