IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND PRIVATE SECTOR GROWTH IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Abstract
Gender inequality remains a pervasive issue globally, with significant implications for women's economic empowerment and social status. This study investigates the effect of gender inequality on women's employment opportunities in Kogi State, Nigeria. The research addresses the specific socio-cultural, economic, educational, and political barriers that limit women's access to employment and evaluates the effectiveness of existing policies and programs aimed at promoting gender equality in the workforce. The study employs a descriptive research design, facilitating a comprehensive exploration of gender disparities in employment within Kogi State. Data is collected from 399 women of working age through self-administered questionnaires utilizing a stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses are conducted using SPSS, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. The findings reveal multifaceted barriers to women's employment, including socio-cultural norms, economic constraints, educational limitations, and political factors. These barriers significantly impede women's economic empowerment and social status, perpetuating gender disparities in the workforce. While some policies and programs show promise, gaps in awareness, implementation, and effectiveness undermine their impact. Gender inequality profoundly affects women's employment opportunities in Kogi State, hindering their economic autonomy and societal recognition. Addressing these barriers requires holistic interventions encompassing socio-cultural, economic, educational, and political domains. Continuous evaluation and refinement of existing policies, along with collaboration between stakeholders, are essential for advancing gender equality in employment and fostering a more inclusive society. Policy recommendations include enhancing vocational training, improving access to affordable childcare, closing wage gaps, and increasing women's representation in decision-making roles. Moreover, fostering collaboration between policymakers, civil society organizations, and academia is crucial for implementing evidence-based strategies and creating a supportive environment for women's economic participation.
