INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF LIBRARY ANXIETY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN GADAU CAMPUS SA'ADU ZUNGUR UNIVERSITY, BAUCHI
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of library anxiety on students’ academic performance within the Faculty of Arts at Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi. Library anxiety is a psychological barrier that hinders students from effectively utilizing library resources due to feelings of inadequacy, fear of judgment, or lack of library skills. Despite the critical role that academic libraries play in fostering research, learning, and academic excellence, many students underperform academically due to limited or ineffective use of these resources stemming from anxiety-related issues. The research adopted a descriptive survey design using a structured questionnaire to collect data from a stratified sample of 150 undergraduate students across various departments in the Faculty of Arts. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools to identify patterns, causes, and effects of library anxiety on students' academic performance. Findings revealed a high prevalence of library anxiety among students, majorly triggered by lack of orientation, poor knowledge of library layout, fear of approaching librarians, and previous negative experiences. A significant correlation was observed between high levels of library anxiety and low academic performance, suggesting that students who experience greater anxiety are less likely to use library resources efficiently, which in turn affects their grades and overall academic success. The study also found that gender, level of study, and prior exposure to library instruction influenced anxiety levels. The study recommends regular library orientation programs, user-friendly signage, approachable and trained library staff, as well as integration of information literacy skills into the faculty’s curriculum. These interventions are aimed at demystifying the library environment and equipping students with the confidence and skills necessary to navigate library systems and access academic resources effectively.
