CLASSROOM CONTROL STYLES AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS IN AKAMKPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, CROSS RIVER STATE.
Abstract
This study focused on investigating classroom control styles and
academic performance of students in mathematics. The research
design adopted for this study was the ex-post facto design. The
area of study is Akamkpa Local Government Area, Cross River
State, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and
transformed into research hypotheses which was tested at .05
level of significance. The study targeted all the 18 public
secondary schools in Akamkpa Local Government Area. The
population of the study comprised of both male and female SS2
~ Students with a total number of (801) during the 2022/2023
school year. To ensure fair representation of the study sample,
stratified random sampling was used in selecting and distributing
the 10 schools. The researcher worked with 10 schools and
sampled 200 respondents which is 25% of the total population.
The hat and draw method were used to select those students that
participated in the study. The sample of the study stood at 200
SSIII students, representing 25% of the total population of 120.
The sample comprises 120 males and 80 females. One instrument
was used for the purpose of data collection in the study. The
instrument titled Classroom Control Styles and Student Academic
Performance Questionnaire (CCSSAPQ), measured the sub-scales
of the independent variable such as time management, classroom
discipline and Seating arrangement. The researcher used a 4
point Likert scale type questionnaire where the respondents were
given specific questions to respond to. Test-re-test method was
used and the reliability index produced a score of .72 and .70
respectively. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested using
Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient at 0.05 level of
significance. Based on the results, findings revealed that there
was a significant relationship between, time management,
classroom discipline, seating arrangement and students’
academic performance. Based on the findings, it was among other
things that recommended that: seating arrangement in classroom
should be done in consideration of students’ peculiarity and
special needs,
