Abstract

Abstract Groundwater is an essential source of potable water in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in areas where surface water resources are limited. This study investigates the groundwater potential of Kashere in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State using geophysical techniques. Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) employing the Schlumberger electrode configuration was conducted at ten locations to determine subsurface resistivity characteristics and aquifer potential. The acquired resistivity data were interpreted using WinResist software to identify geoelectric layers and evaluate hydrogeological parameters. The results revealed six geoelectric layers with varying resistivity and thickness values across the study area. The thickness of the layers ranged from 0.8 m to over 120 m. Formation parameters such as longitudinal conductance, transverse resistance, reflection coefficient, resistivity contrast, coefficient of anisotropy, and formation resistivity were evaluated to assess groundwater potential. The results indicate that the study area possesses favorable groundwater conditions suitable for borehole development. The integration of geological mapping and electrical resistivity sounding proved effective for identifying suitable zones for groundwater exploration.
