EFFECT OF FORTIFIED COMPOST ON TOMATO GROWTH AND YIELD (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.)
Abstract
The experiment was conducted during the raining season of 2024 at Agropeak caf farm L.T.D
kaswan bera area near Taraba state University research farm Jalingo, to assess the effect of
fortified compost on growth and yield of UC-82-B tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) variety
which consisted of six(6) treatments (Compost, C+urea, C+ N.P.K, C+ P.k, C + N.p.k 15:15:30
compared with untreated ( Control ) arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with
four (4) pots per treatment replicated thrice to give seventy two (72) pots. Data were collected
on number of leaves, leave area, number of fruits, fresh fruit weight and subjected to analysis of
variance (ANOVA) using statistical analysis system ( SAS 9.4) and means separated using
Duncan multiple range test (DMRT) at 5% level . The result indicate that C+ Urea had the most
number of leaves (89.3/plant) compared to control (26.4/plant). C+ urea and C+ N.P.K resulted
in the highest leave, C + urea had the highest fresh fruit weight (51.7g) of tomato compared to
C+ N.P.K 15:15:30 and Compost ( 4.9- 11.6g) and C+ N.P.K recorded the highest number of
fruit (NF) though not statistically significant from the others, it is 1.12% higher(5.3g/plant ) than
the control (2.5g/plant). This rate (10g/ plant) of C+ urea and C + N.P.K fertilizers are
therefore recommended for further field trials .
