ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF FLAMBOYANT PLANT (DELONIXREGIA) EXTRACT AGAINST SALMONELLA TYPHI AND CANDIDA ALBICANS
Abstract
Delonix regia is known as royal Poinciana, flamboyant tree, flametree, peacock flower. The family is Fabaceae/Leguminosae. It is nativetoMadagascar. This tree some say is the world’s most colorful tree. Delonixregia leaves are anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antifungal, and havecytotoxicactivity. The alarming rate at which new and re-emerginginfectiousdiseases are forming and spreading is a cause for concern. In addition, thedevelopment of resistance to antibiotics now in clinical use isanotherissue that must be addressed. The study aim to examine the antibacterial
activity of flamboyant plant extracts against Salmonella typhi andCandidaalbicans. The flamboyant plant parts; roots, stem and bark will becollectedin the institution. Anti-bacterial activity was generally higher againstCandida albicans, with the inhibition zone of 28mmat 100%concentration, the least was seen against Salmonella typhi with the inhibition zoneof 19%at 100% concentration. Ethanol is a more efficient solvent for extractingantimicrobial compounds from the bark. These results suggest thatDelonix regia possesses promising antimicrobial properties, particularyagainst Candida albicans. The bark and root extract appear tobemorepotent than the stem, especially at mid-range concentrations (25-50%).
