THE ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF NEMATODE AFFECTING TOMATOES GROWN IN SOME SELECTED AREA IN GADAU IN ITAS/GADAU LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF BAUCHI STATE
Abstract
This study aimed to isolate and identify nematodes affecting tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)
grown in selected areas of Gadau, Itas/Gadau Local Government Area, Bauchi State. A total of
seventy (70) root and soil samples were collected from three localities Rafin Gabu, Rafin Sokal,
and Rafin Walai and processed using root-incubation and standard extraction techniques.
Nematodes were identified microscopically based on morphology, tail shape, and movement.
Results indicated the presence of Meloidogyne spp. (root-knot nematodes) and Pratylenchus spp.
(lesion nematodes), with Meloidogyne spp. predominating. Prevalence was highest in Rafin
Gabu and Rafin Walai, while Rafin Sokal showed lower infestation levels. The findings
demonstrate that nematode infestation is a significant constraint to tomato production in Gadau.
Recommendations include nematicide application during nursery bed preparation and
transplanting, adoption of crop rotation and intercropping, addition of organic matter, and farmer
awareness/training. Further molecular identification and broader surveys are suggested to better
qunatify distribution and economic impact.
