ASSESSMENT OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT ON THE PROVISION OF POTABLE WATER IN GOMBE METROPOLIS, NIGERIA
Abstract
Access to safe and adequate potable water remains a major challenge in many urban areas in Nigeria, including Gombe. This study aims to assess the role of government in the provision of potable water supply in Gombe Metropolis. The specific objectives of the study are to examine government infrastructure development in potable water supply in the metropolis, assess residents’ accessibility to potable water in the study area, and map the spatial distribution of water supply facilities. The study adopted a quantitative research methodology to obtain relevant data from residents of the study area. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 400 respondents selected through a simple random sampling technique across different parts of the metropolis to ensure adequate representation. Descriptive statistical methods such as frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. In addition, Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and maps were used to illustrate the spatial distribution of water supply facilities within the study area. The findings reveal that a significant proportion of residents still experience irregular access to potable water despite several government interventions in the development of water infrastructure. Although government projects such as boreholes and water supply schemes have improved water availability in some locations, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor maintenance of facilities, and limited funding continue to affect effective service delivery. The study recommends increased government investment in water infrastructure, improved maintenance of existing water facilities, better spatial planning in the distribution of water supply projects, and stronger community participation in water resource management to ensure sustainable and equitable access to potable water in the metropolis.
