AUTOMATED CRIME TRACKING INFORMATION SYSTEM IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS (A CASE STUDY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Crime tracking and management remain significant challenges in many urban and rural communities,
including the University of Port Harcourt and its surrounding areas. This project presents the design and
implementation of an Automated Crime Tracking Information System in tertiary institutions, tailored
to enhance the effectiveness of crime management in tertiary institutions, with the University of Port
Harcourt as a case study. The system integrates modern technologies such as Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) and a user-friendly web interface to enable swift reporting, tracking, and analysis of
criminal activities. It allows users to report incidents through various channels, including web forms and
mobile applications, while law enforcement officers can access a centralized database to monitor crime
patterns, allocate resources, and generate actionable insights. The system also features automated alert
notifications and a dashboard for visualizing crime hotspots. Through proper testing and evaluation, this
project demonstrates that the Automated Crime Tracking Information System significantly improves
response times, data accuracy, and resource management, providing a scalable and efficient solution for
enhancing campus safety and contributing to community security efforts.
