Abstract

This study examined the knowledge and attitude of mothers towards childhood immunization in Local Government Area, Kwara Stale. Immunization remains one of the most effective public health interventions in reducing child morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases. However, in many rural communities, childhood immunization coverage remains suboptimal due to several socio-cultural and logistical barriers. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 120 mothers of children aged 0-5 years selected through simple random sampling. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that a majority of the respondents had a good level of knowledge regarding immunization, including awareness of its benefits and vaccination schedule. Most mothers also displayed a positive attitude toward immunization, with a willingness to complete their children's vaccine schedule. However, several factors such as distance to health facilities, vaccine stock-outs, and occasional misinformation were identified as barriers to complete immunization. The study concluded that while mothers in the community generally understood the importance of immunization, targeted efforts are needed to address access and awareness barriers. It is recommended that health education campaigns, improved vaccine availability, and closer health outreach be strengthened to ensure fill immunization coverage in rural areas like Onigbadi.
