Abstract

The research project is aimed at phytochemical and antimicrobial activity of pawpaw seed extract.in view of the above sample was purchased at Maiduguri Monday market, Maiduguri Borno state. the pawpaw was washed with distilled water and pulverized in to powder.100g of the pulverized pawpaw seed was suspended in 1500ml of methanol for 24h and shaken at regular intervals. the extract was den sieved first with cheese cloth and then whatman filter paper. the filtrate was concentrated to dryness in a water bath preset in 45⁰c and was subjected to further analysis. the result for phytochemical screening of pawpaw seed extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac -glycosides, terpenoids respectively. however saponins was not detected in the sample. The Antimicrobial activity of pawpaw seed extract revealed that the test sample was active against both of the organisms. at various ratios tested such as 2:1(10mm), 4:1(10mm), 6:1(10mm) and 8:1(8mm) respectively. It was observed that the dilution increases the activity is decreasing so this shows that the activity of pawpaw seed extract is close dependent against salmonella typhus. the tested sample against psuedomonas aeruginosa showered that at various ratios of distilled water to the pawpaw seed extract is active against tested organisms is follows,2:1(7mm),4:1(9mm),6:1(10mm)and8:1(12mm) respectively this shows that the activity increases as the sample dilution increased. therefore the pawpaw seed extract is a potential candidate for pharmaceutical industry.
