DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF ELECTRIC MOTOR-POWERED WHEELCHAIR
Abstract
The main aim of the project was to design and fabricate a working electric motor- powered wheelchair capable of bearing a load of up to 100kg and can travel on relatively rough or slightly inclined surfaces. This project is intended to be low cost and versatile enough to be installed even on pre-existing wheelchairs and the major problem it solves is that it gives users a sense of independence in moving from place to place across short distances without assistance. The wheelchair is also fitted with a control panel and a joystick for controlling the direction and speed of movement. Several past published literatures on this topic were carefully examined and all the insights are detailed in the literature review section of this report. The fabrication aspect included several simple processes such as welding, grinding, and machining of custom parts. The final product was also able to meet the design requirements in terms of speed(5-6mph) and duration of battery life (30mins to 1hour). While Several recommendations have been made to improve this work in the final chapter of this report, it can be concluded that the project was successful.
