Abstract
ABSTRACT
This Study aimed to study the causes and effect of female genital mutilation in Katsina Metropolis,
Katsina State. FGM is deeply embedded in the socio-cultural fabric of Katsina, with strong ties to
traditional practices and community norms. Many families adhere to the practice out of fear of
social exclusion and stigma. The cultural perception that FGM enhances marriageability and
preserves family honor plays a crucial role in perpetuating the practice. This study is a descriptive
survey type which is designed to examine the causes and effect of female genital mutilation in
Katsina Metropolis, Katsina State. A total of 200 respondents were selected for the study. The
research found out that Female Genital Mutilation remains a significant public health and human
rights issue in Katsina Metropolis. The persistence of the practice is driven by complex sociocultural factors, including traditional beliefs, societal pressures, and economic considerations.
The detrimental health consequences for women and girls are severe and often overlooked,
necessitating immediate attention from health care providers, policymakers, and community
leaders. It is recommended that government should utilize diverse communication channels,
including social media, local radio stations, and community gatherings, to disseminate
information on the health risks associated with FGM, legal consequences, and available support
services
