THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN PROMOTING DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF KADUNA STATE (2019-2023)
Abstract
This study explores the role of social media in promoting democracy in Kaduna State, Nigeria, from 2019 to 2023. It examines how platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram have been utilized to advance freedom of speech, voter education, and democratic participation among citizens. Utilizing a descriptive research design and a sample size of 184 respondents from Kaduna State University and political supporters, data was collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using statistical tools. The findings reveal that social media significantly enhances political engagement, fosters awareness of democratic rights, and serves as a platform for citizen mobilization. However, challenges such as misinformation, digital divide, and restricted freedom of expression were identified. The study concludes that while social media has transformative potential for democratic consolidation, its efficacy is undermined by regulatory gaps and user limitations. Recommendations include fostering media literacy, addressing the spread of misinformation, and leveraging social media for inclusive civic engagement.
