BACTERIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF RESERVOIR WATER IN SAPELE, DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the portability of two (2) different reservoir water (A and B) that were regularly used by the people of Sapele metropolis. The objective of the study was to determine the quality of reservoir water samples. Samples of reservoir water regularly used were collected, and subjected to bacteriological analysis. Total heterotrophic bacteria in the water tanks samples were obtained using the spread plate method. The results showed that all of the samples of water tanks exhibited values of physical/organoleptic parameters, inorganic constituents, and mean coliform and E. coli counts per 100 ml above the WHO/EPA maximum permissible levels; and were therefore, not considered safe for drinking. A total of two bacterial isolates were identified, which include Staphylococcus spp and E. coli. It is recommended that water from such water tanks should be boiled before consumption to ensure public health and safety.
