THE IMPACT OF CURCUMIN ON HEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF DICHLORVOS EXPOSED MALE WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Dichlorvos is a colorless to amber liquid commonly used as pesticides in homes and on farm as pest control. Studies have shown that dichlorvos may cause varying degree of hemato-toxicity. Curcumin is a bioactive compound found in turmeric, and sometimes ginger, it is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effects of curcumin on the hematological parameters such red blood cell (RBcs), white blood cells (WBCs), platelets (PLT), hematocrits (HCT), Hemoglobin concentration (HGB), mean corpuscular volume
(MCV), Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) of dichlorvos exposed male Wistar rats.
In this study, forty (40) male wistar rats were randomly assigned into four (4) groups, after two weeks of acclimatization. Group A (control) only received standard diet and water, group B (DDVP only) was exposed to DDVP at 2 mls for 10 minutes in a dessicator daily for 2 weeks, in addition to rat diet and water. Group C (DDVP + Curcumin) received DDVP as administered to group B, as well as later treatment with curcumin (100 ml/kg) daily for four weeks. And group D which received Curcumin only as in group C. At the end of the 8th week, the animals were sacrificed and blood samples (3 mls) were collected into ethylendiaminetetaacetic acid (EDTA) bottles. For rhe estimation of hematological parameters, the data obtained were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA in graph pad prism 5.
Exposure of the Wistar rats to dichlorvos caused a significant increase (p
