THE IMPACT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION ON STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING OF DEMOCRACY: A CASE STUDY OF GOMBE METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study examines the impact of political science education on students' understanding of democracy in Gombe State, Nigeria. Given the critical role democracy plays in governance, human rights, and socio-economic development, it is essential that citizens—particularly students—acquire a strong foundation in democratic principles and civic engagement. However, Nigeria's democratic experience has been hindered by challenges such as electoral violence, corruption, and political apathy, which may be linked to gaps in political education. This research investigates how political science education influences students' knowledge, values, and participation in democratic processes. Using a case study approach, data is collected from senior secondary schools (SSS) in Gombe State through surveys and interviews. The findings are expected to highlight the extent to which political science education fosters democratic awareness and participation among students, while also identifying key challenges in its implementation. The study aims to inform policymakers and educators on strategies to enhance civic education, ultimately contributing to a more engaged and informed electorate in Gombe State and beyond.
