Abstract

Tacca leontopetaloides L. Kuntze has been known as a remedy in folk medicine and also a staple food source in many tropical countries. Furthermore this study aimed at Antimicrobial activity of Tacca leontopetaloides against some selected pathogens including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger the flour were collected from Lafia modern market, and extracted using ethanol and aqueous solvents. The antimicrobial efficacy of both extracts was determined through disc diffusion and agar well diffusion methods. Results indicated that the ethanol extract exhibit stronger antimicrobial activity, with inhibition zones that reaches 16mm for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans at 75% concentration, while the aqueous extract showed moderate activity, with the least inhibition of 8mm for candida albicans, and E. coli, 01mm at 75% concentration. The study concluded that ethanol-based Tacca leontopetaloides flour extracts hold significant potential as natural antimicrobial agents, especiall for treating infection case by Staphylococcus aureus and candida albicans. This study recommended that further studies focus on isolating and identification of the specific bioactive compounds in Tacca leontopetaloids for is antimicrobial activity.
