Abstract

This study examines disaster control and recovery mechanisms in the banking sector, with a focus on the recent cyberattack on Zenith Bank as a case study. The increasing dependence on digital banking platforms has exposed financial institutions to significant cybersecurity threats, making effective disaster management strategies essential for operational continuity and customer trust. The research investigates the nature and impact of the cyberattack, including disruptions to banking services, potential data breaches, and financial implications. It further evaluates the response strategies adopted by the bank, such as incident detection, containment, system restoration, and communication with stakeholders. Emphasis is placed on the effectiveness of existing disaster recovery plans, cybersecurity frameworks, and regulatory compliance in mitigating risks. Data for the study were obtained through secondary sources, including reports, journals, and credible online publications on cybersecurity incidents in the banking sector. The findings reveal that while proactive security measures and rapid response strategies can significantly reduce the impact of cyber disasters, gaps still exist in preparedness, employee awareness, and system resilience. The study concludes that financial institutions must adopt robust disaster recovery plans, invest in advanced cybersecurity technologies, and ensure continuous staff training to enhance resilience against cyber threats. It recommends the implementation of real-time monitoring systems, regular security audits, and stronger regulatory enforcement to safeguard banking operations and customer data in an increasingly digital financial environment.
