Abstract

The design and construction of a step-down variable output transformer is essential in providing a flexible and controlled AC voltage supply for laboratory experiments, domestic applications, and industrial uses. This project focuses on developing a transformer capable of reducing a high input voltage to a lower, adjustable output voltage while maintaining efficiency, safety, and reliability. The system operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where alternating current in the primary winding generates a varying magnetic flux that induces a corresponding voltage in the secondary winding. The transformer is designed with appropriate turns ratio calculations to achieve the desired step-down effect, while a variable output is obtained through the incorporation of tapping points or a variable resistor mechanism. Key components used in the construction include laminated soft iron core, insulated copper windings, and protective casing to minimize energy losses such as eddy current and hysteresis losses. Proper insulation and cooling methods were also considered to enhance durability and performance. Performance evaluation of the constructed transformer shows that it effectively delivers a stable and adjustable low voltage output suitable for different applications. The device demonstrates good voltage regulation, efficiency, and operational safety under varying load conditions. This project highlights the importance of proper design techniques and material selection in transformer construction, and it serves as a practical solution for controlled voltage supply needs in educational and technical environments.
