N-POWER AND YOUTH EMPLOYMENT IN AKWA IBOM STATE (2016-2023)
Abstract
Nigeria has the highest rates of youth unemployment in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to
research, rather than record remarkable progress in national socio-economic development
due to her enormous wealth, Nigeria retrogressed to become the headquarters of poverty of
the world. To arrest these circumstances, there is the need for the training of educated men
and women who can function effectively in their society in which they live in terms of self
employment and self-reliance. Despite the implementation of the N-Power program in Akwa
Ibom State, there remains a persistent challenge of youth unemployment in the state. The
objective of this study was to examine the impact of N-power on Youth Employment in Akwa
Ibom State from 2016 – 2023. The study utilized a descriptive survey method. In determining
the sample size for the study, Taro Yamane formula was used, thus the sample size for this
study was 213. Questionnaire was used to gather information from the respondents. The
study made use of both primary and secondary data. The study was anchored on Basic Needs
Theory as propounded Ekong E. Ekong (2003) and Trickle-down theory as propounded by
Obadan (1997). The data were statistically analyzed in line with the objectives using
frequency distribution, percentages and was analyzed using chi-square. The findings from
this study revealed among others that N-Power program had a significant influence on the
acquisition of skills, standard of living and self-reliance of youth in Akwa Ibom State. It also
indicated that while N-power has contributed positively to youth employment, by enhancing
skills and providing income, challenges such as inconsistent stipend payment, limited job
opportunities after the program, and inadequate infrastructural support has hindered its
overall impacts. It is therefore recommended among others that N-power program should
regularly update its training modules to better align with evolving market demands, ensuring
that the skills acquired by beneficiaries are relevant and in high demands across various
industries. Also, to further promote entrepreneurship, the government should provide access
to microfinance or startup capital for N-power beneficiaries who wish to start their own
businesses.
