Abstract

The road infrastructure plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of any region. The aim of this study is to assess the condition of the sub-grade of the Federal Polytechnic Idah Staff Quarter Road and design an optimal road alignment for its rehabilitation to enhance its functionality, safety, and durability. This study adopts a combination of field investigation, laboratory testing, and engineering design techniques to assess the sub-grade condition and design an optimal road alignment. A visual inspection and physical assessment of the Federal Polytechnic Idah Prince Abubarka Audu drive were conducted to identify signs of distress such as: Surface cracks, Potholes, Rutting, Drainage issues and Road geometry and alignment deficiencies. Field observations revealed widespread pavement failure, including surface cracking, potholes, and signs of sub-grade instability. Geotechnical investigations and laboratory tests confirmed that the existing sub-grade consists predominantly of siltyclay mixed with stone-grains with an acceptable CBR value ranged between (17-19)% with a good drainage characteristics. These factors significantly agree to the load bearing capacity and durability of the pavement. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are made. The road natural subgrade is suitable to carry any load without subgrade replacement, construct side drains and culvert with appropriate slope to moderate water flow.
