CHRISTIAN PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS: A MORAL CONCERN IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA
Abstract
This study explores the role and impact of Christian participation in politics in contemporary
Nigeria, examining the motivations, challenges, and contributions of Christian communities to
the nation’s political landscape. Nigeria, with its diverse religious composition, experiences
significant interaction between religious identity and political affiliation. The research focuses
on understanding how Christian beliefs influence political behavior, including voting patterns,
political activism, and policy advocacy. It also investigates the role of religious institutions,
particularly the church, in shaping political discourse and mobilizing Christian voters. The study
used qualitative research methods, including surveys, interviews with Christian leaders, and
focus group discussions with ordinary believers. Key findings indicate that Christians in Nigeria
are highly engaged in politics, with a strong emphasis on promoting social justice, combating
corruption, and advocating for policies that align with Christian ethical teachings. The study
reveals notable differences in political engagement between various Christian denominations,
with Pentecostals showing the highest levels of political involvement, particularly in supporting
candidates who align with their religious and moral values. However, the research also
highlights the challenges faced by Christians, including political polarization, religious conflicts,
and the tension between religious and political identities. The study contributes to a deeper
understanding of the intersection of faith and politics in a religiously plural society, providing
insights into how Christian political participation shapes governance, public policy, and
national unity. Recommendations are made for greater interfaith cooperation, enhanced political
education within Christian communities, and more active involvement in policy advocacy. This
research adds to the growing body of literature on religion and politics in Africa, particularly in
the context of Nigeria's complex socio-political environment.
