THE IMPORTANCE OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN ENHANCING THE EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES
Abstract
Cooperative societies play a vital role in promoting economic development, financial
inclusion, and social welfare, particularly in developing economies. However, many
cooperatives face management challenges arising from inadequate skills, weak governance
structures, and limited member participation. This study examines the importance of
cooperative education and training in enhancing the effective management of cooperative
societies. Cooperative education equips members, leaders, and employees with essential
knowledge in governance, financial management, leadership, accountability, and cooperative
principles. Through structured training programs, cooperatives are able to improve decisionmaking processes, strengthen transparency, enhance operational efficiency, and promote
active member participation. The study highlights how continuous capacity building fosters
professionalism, reduces mismanagement, and improves sustainability and competitiveness
of cooperative organizations. Furthermore, cooperative education encourages adherence to
cooperative values and principles, thereby strengthening democratic control and collective
responsibility among members. The paper concludes that investment in regular education and
training programs is a critical strategy for improving institutional performance and ensuring
long-term growth and stability of cooperative societies. Recommendations are made for
policymakers, cooperative unions, and management bodies to prioritize training initiatives as
a foundation for effective cooperative management.
