THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH IN EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: THE CASE OF CATHOLIC CHURCH, ABAK DEANERY
Abstract
The Catholic Church played a crucial role in educational development within the Abak Deanery,
Nigeria, though its impact was not fully explored. Despite significant challenges in the Nigerian
educational system, such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient teaching staff, and limited
resources (Okeke & Onuoha, 2020), the Catholic Church contributed to addressing these issues
through mission schools and outreach programs. However, the extent of its contributions to
improving educational access and infrastructure, as well as fostering ethical development
through religious education, required further investigation (Ekwunife, 2021). This study aimed to
assess the Catholic Church’s contributions to educational development in Abak, focusing on five
key objectives: identifying factors necessitating educational development in Abak, examining the
agencies facilitating development, analyzing the Church's specific contributions, identifying
factors limiting the Church’s effectiveness, and proposing ways to enhance its contributions. The
research employed a survey design, incorporating interviews with Church members and
community residents to gather diverse perspectives. Data was analyzed thematically to derive
insights into the Church’s educational impact. The findings revealed that key factors driving
educational development in Abak included societal demand for quality education, government
policies, and the Church’s educational outreach. The Catholic Church significantly contributed
through the establishment of schools and religious education programs. However, challenges
such as inadequate funding, societal changes, and competition from other educational providers
limited its effectiveness. The study recommended better funding, greater community
involvement, and increased collaboration with local and governmental agencies to enhance
educational outcomes.
