PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF JATROPHA TANJORENSIS (HOSPITAL TOO FAR) LEAVES
Abstract
This study investigates the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical
composition of Jatropha tanjorensis leaf. The plant was collected from a in the
village. The harvested sample was washed, dried and ground to powder. The
extraction was done using maceration method and concentrated with water bath.
From the result of the study, qualitative analysis identified the presence of
saponins, tannins, flavones, glycosides, quinones, and carotenoids. Quantitative
analysis further showed that the leaf contains saponins (10.0%), tannins (0.7215
mg/L), flavones and flavonols (0.1379 mg/L) and cardiac glycosides (0.0309 mg/L).
These bioactive compounds contribute to the medicinal properties of Jatropha
tanjorensis, commonly used in traditional medicine. These bioactive compounds
are known for lowering cholesterol levels, enhancing immune responses and
possessing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. They promote wound
healing, act as antioxidants and prevent oxidative damage. The findings highlight
the plant’s potential for therapeutic applications, particularly in treating
cardiovascular, microbial, and inflammatory conditions. Further research into the
pharmacological effects and dosage optimization of these bioactive compounds is
recommended to fully realize the medicinal potential of Jatropha tanjorensis.
