Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the security challenges and solutions for critical infrastructure networks, which include essential services such as power grids, water supply systems, and transportation networks which are significant in the context of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation and infrastructure. The increasing reliance on interconnected digital technologies has exposed these systems to significant cybersecurity risks, including cyber-attacks, operational disruptions, and physical threats. The research aims to identify the primary vulnerabilities in these critical infrastructures and propose innovative security solutions to mitigate risks. The study explores the impact of sophisticated cyber-attacks, such as the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, on essential services, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity measures. By focusing on challenges arising from legacy systems and the interdependence of infrastructure networks, the research emphasizes the importance of multi-layered defense strategies. A conceptual framework is developed to address these challenges, incorporating risk assessment, threat detection through AI and ML technologies, incident response planning, resilience building, and collaboration among stakeholders. The findings suggest that a coordinated effort among governments, private companies, and international partners is crucial for securing critical infrastructure networks and ensuring their resilience against evolving cyber threats. Through qualitative research methods, including surveys and risk assessments, this study provides valuable insights into the current security gaps and offers actionable recommendations to enhance the cybersecurity posture of critical infrastructures. The outcomes of this research benefit both public and private sectors by improving the resilience of essential services and protecting national security and public safety
